No time in a day
Today's meetings were not as bad as they could have been. But I don't want to revisit that part of the day, it's over. heh.. Afterwards, I went to my parents' house to talk and what not. My sister and brother-in-law where there too, so we all talked for a while. Then, I went to Sean S's house to watch the premier of the new Battlestar Galactica on the Sci-Fi channel. I know I don't watch a whole lot of TV at all, but my not getting the Sci-Fi channel is just WRONG! And looks like I'm going back tomorrow for the second part. It comes on too late for this. Okay, so here's the deal with me and no Sci-Fi. I get basic cable here for free as part of my homeowner's association dues. That's all fine and dandy, except I HATE the local cable company. Well, not necessarily them, but their service. Sci-Fi is not part of the basic package. I would have to upgrade to digital to get it. I'm not really afraid to pay a little extra for this, but I have some really strong reservations against this. Their digital cable is just HORRIBLE! I absolutely cannot stomach having to actually USE their issued digital cable box. It is SLOW, UGLY, and the guide only shows one half-hour of like 9 channels (and 3 ads!). Changing channels is painfully slow. My parents have this at home, and I despise having to use it when I visit. So, you see, digital cable is out of the question. Too bad I can't get the service that is available in Boca Raton. THAT is SWEET! Anyway. Dish. Sounds nice. But for the amout of TV watching I do, buying a dish and paying monthly fees for it seems a little gluttonous, especially when I have free basic cable already. What a dilemma. And current financial constraints have kept me on the "I don't need it" path. Really, I don't. It would just be more hardware to maintain and integrate into the systems.

Yeah, well don't feel bad about being down south, cause up here in Orlando the cable situation isn't much better. :) I used to pay around $160 a *MONTH* to these guys because I had Internet and their digital cable package. *shudder* - to heck with that. I dropped down to internet only and uh, somehow the filter got taken off my cable.... hmmm. :) $45 is a much better price to pay, imo, and that would be only internet, you know. Normally. *eg* We're thinking about going back to dish though - DirectTV has that cool new TiVO thing...

Adelphia might look good to you Kelly, but they are priced high. Until recently it actually was a good deal. Then they went and made these new Digital Packages, and Digital packages with high speed internet. They say this was done to make viewing more pleasurable, etc. Well I didn't get any new channels. The price of basic cable went up $2.95, but somehow my total bill is increasing by $14 a month. I call them and the dumbass was like well your rates should of gone up a year ago so be happy about that, your getting a great deal, whatever, what happened to customer service?? And say I wanted to drop some channels, if you don't get exactly what these packages offer, they consider it ala carte, and its even more expensive. If I dropped 2 packages [basically drop showtime and cinemax], I think I'd save less then $5. And they tack on digital plus to these packages [which is liek 15 channels of pure crap, which I asked if I can remove, they are like then you'll have to do everythign ala carte, and your bill will be much higher. So yea, I'm not exactly happy with Adelphia right now, but what exactly are the options, there arn't many, because cable sucks ass :-)

Don't get me started on cable access! My apartment complex decided last December to chuck Adelphia (The STBs weren't bad but I would get a lot of tiling sometimes) and go with a joke outfit from AL called Mediaworks. Their basic is very high (40 bucks a month) and I ordered the Starz pack (which is Starz and Encore)for about 10 bucks more. Basically what a lot of these small (read junky) operators are doing is getting contracts with complexes and high-rise apartments and piping in/multiplexing a DirecTV signal for those who don't have access to the Southern horizon (like myself) Adelphia was more expensive but the service wasn't anywhere as bad, these guys always lose a channel or two after a rainstorm (which they take a day or two to restore) and they are agregious offenders of using advanced billing for service that hasn't yet been rendered within the billing cycle. (Meaning they bill you a 1/2 to 3/4 a month in advance) I am ready to chuck my cable but I really like my C-SPAN. The commercials by the dish advertisers are very accurate, conventional cable operators are pigs and they need to be reigned in by competition or regulation. I really wish their was an alternative for a la carte VOD (conventional channels and cable) over high speed internet. (Oh, BG, I loved that when I was a kid but the new one doesn't look all that great. I very recently cleaned out my den/2nd bedroom and found a bunch of BG trading cards from "Dynamite", the old Scholastic magazine, probably should have kept them)
